When to use swivels?
Do you find swivels to be valuable when bottom fishing? Or is their value limited to lures like spoons? I'm preparing some rigs for an upcoming surf fishing trip in clear water, and I don't want more hardware than I need. Basically this will be casting a pyramid sinker-weighted dropper rig, then let...

Re: Four on da Fly!!!
Carp are cool! They just aren't that photogenic. Kind of like sea trout. The pictures look bad, but "in person" it's a pretty fish.
First freshwater fish I ever caught on a fly was a 7# carp. Have loved carp ever since.

I didn't know they went in the bay. Do you happen to know what kind of bottom they were fishing over? (Grass, oysters, sand?) Thanks!

Re: Skeptical about kayaks
Thanks for sharing! I appreciate it. I will definitely check that event where you can try them. I'm going to a place where I can rent, so that will give me some experience with a sit-on type kayak. One of my big concerns is mobility. If I had a pickup truck it would be a no-brainer, but I think I'll...

Favorite pompano rig?
I've been using a three way rig, with a three way swivel, a pyramid sinker, and a single 1/0 hook baited with fresh shrimp.
What is your favorite pompano rig for clear gulf beach waters?
Thanks!

Re: Skeptical about kayaks
Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I think I'll try renting one and see if I like it. Big issue for me is weather to get a small trailer. I think yes because it used to be such a hassle to load my canoe. Do you have an opinion of the Hobie foot powered models? I saw a video ad while waiting at the air...

Skeptical about kayaks
I had a canoe for a long time, then replaced it with a 14 foot aluminum motorboat. I like that motorboat, but I see some value in the kayaks. What are the pros and cons of fishing a kayak?
Pliers.
I have been using forceps and nail clippers as standard tools, But decided to try fishing pliers with integral line cutter, specifically the Rapala aluminum model. Nice! Wish I had tried these years ago. Very convenient and excellent for unhooking, line cutting and crimping.

Re: Pompano eating
They are good when frozen. I wrap the filets with plastic wrap, freeze them on a rack in the freezer, then put the individual portions in a ziploc bag for storage. I only keep them two months at the most. Fresh is better, though.
I have seen them frozen whole at asian markets up north.

Re: Pompano Fall Run
I'm not sure about water temps, but I look for that cooling trend that begins in the middle of September. Expect to start seeing them from about the last week of September well into October. It is definitely worth some persistence. I fish early in the morning before sunrise and well into korning, mi...
