Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
Launch at the Fort in St Marks and run out to the lighthouse or even a bit further. Stay within the channel markers and you should be fine. There are some sharp turns, and if you miss a marker you could end up on an oyster bar, so I'd follow another boat the first few times or use the Navionics app ...

Re: New Killswitch Requirement
I've been better about using mine since that accident on the river last year. Especially offshore alone . . .

Fresh ones are good for fish tacos. Not so good from the freezer

Re: While I prefer Humminbird products....
Has anyone tried the Lowrance ActiveTarget Live? It's supposed to work with HDS or Elite FS, but is it a separate module or a new transducer? What would it be good for - inshore/flats? Seems pricey

Re: While I prefer Humminbird products....
I run an elite ti2 9 inch. Offshore I like to put downscan in the middle zoomed in on the bottom along with sidescan on either side. So I added a cheap Galaxy tab-a 10 inch tablet to my dash to show navionics charts. Inshore I just use the elite. Lots of bargains on this unit since the Elite FS came...

Re: Flounder Report
Just curious -- how do y'all make sure the flounder is 14" before you hit 'em with the gig? Seems like throwing back a gigged flounder would just be feeding the crabs.

Re: Weather and Navigation Seminar
I kept it on. They got past their tech difficulties after a bit. I learned why fog over water takes longer to burn off than fog over land. Got a link to their electronic chart viewer which is replacing their paper charts. That's about it for over an hour long webinar. As my kids would say, . . . meh...

Re: Shallow water grouper out of St. Marks ?
5 miles from the lighthouse and you're on St Marks reef. Over-fished, but I have caught grouper there in about 18 foot depth.

Snacks, nuts etc. Had to cut out the salty stuff to please my heart doctor.

Re: Any life on Wakulla Big Bend reef?
Thanx, thought it was just me.
Even though they're more heavily fished, I have more luck on StMarks reef, Rotary, Wakulla DZ and Barge 24. When I grow up I'm gonna find me some more private numbers

Re: Visiting from Jacksonville, FL
Cold weather's pushing the trout up into deeper holes on the rivers. Use small #1 hooks with shrimp for sheepshead around docks & pilings
