Re: Need advice on Penn conventional reels
Thanks very much, guys. I'll see how the refurbishing goes before I decide how to use these old gems. I don't really have a big snapper/grouper reel, and the Long Beach might haul in one or two on the right rod. Otherwise, I'll just clean it up and put it back in its honored place with other family ...

Re: Need advice on Penn conventional reels
Yes indeed, SS-342. I'm grateful for such good help. The cleanup didn't start well: Apparently I stripped threads on a bearing on the Peer when I took off the oil cap/handle screw. The screw won't go back in, and the old bearing threads now look chewed up. I ordered another bearing online, but next ...

Need advice on Penn conventional reels
Help me out here, y'all. I've always used spinning reels but would like to try two "oldish" Penn conventional reels that my late father-in-law had. One is a Peer 109, and the other (much larger) is a Long Beach 67. I'm cleaning and oiling them now, and I'll try to attach a photo. Any recom...

Thanks much -- I've used that for other stuff before, but it has been a while. I'll check it out.

Re: loose wire on fishfinder cable
Thanks, reelhandy. I figured it must be the power cable, since it's the bigger of the two. You're right about the blue wire; I didn't notice it until I enlarged the photo. I'll see if I can get a good connection to the boot and then seal 'em with a little tape. I'll also try to figure out what's at ...

loose wire on fishfinder cable
wire 1.jpg I have a loose white wire on the boot/connector that screws into the back of my Lowrance Elite 5 DSI. But the unit is working fine, as far as I can tell. Does anyone know what the wire might be connected to, and how urgent it might be to fix it? Would it be easier just to replace the cab...

Re: tides for Indian Pass?
Thanks, Ifishtoo. That makes sense. Alas, we're not taking our boat on a 2-day visit to the Pass campgrounds. We'll be surf- and wade-fishing. But it's good to know the tide points for that, too.

tides for Indian Pass?
Has anyone figure the closest tide location for Indian Pass? The NOAA chart that I like lists Apalachicola, Cat Point, Apalachicola River railroad bridge, Lower Anchorage, and West Pass (which as I understand it, is on the opposite end of St. Vincent Island). http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tide_pr...

Re: reel to match old Berkley Jet Sport rod
Thanks, leonreno. I may have to spring for a new Penn reel (or a good used one) as a good match. It's a nice old rod, and it feels a lot like Penn rods in that size. Maybe it was Berkley's version of a Penn at some point.

reel to match old Berkley Jet Sport rod
I have a yard sale rod I found, and I'm trying to match it with a reel. The rod is vintage, but then so am I. It's a Berkley Jet Sport 161 7-foot, fiberglass. It feels a little heavy (underbalanced) for the Okuma Avenger AV40 I put on it, but a little light (overbalanced) by a Penn Silverado 6000. I...

I know -- it's that way for decent lawnmower batteries, too. Thanks; I'll check Academy.

flounder light batteries?
Any recommendations on a good 12-volt battery for our new flounder light, and a good place to get one, inexpensive? The light is hand-held, 23 watts, pulling 1.9 amps. We'll probably try the old float-it-on-a-tube trick for wading. But I'd like to have a compact battery (rather than the usual 12V ca...

Re: Has anyone tried these suckers?
Thanks, y'all. Demon, I tried Velcro strips on a small caddy/lure holder, and the glue melted in the sun after a couple of weeks. Maybe I need to try industrial-grade, rather than yard-sale grade. :-? You're right; the suckers' price is out of my comfort zone. But I may look some more at their cup h...

Has anyone tried these suckers?
I like the idea of not having to drill holes in the boat. But I've never seen a vacuum mount or stick-on that stays mounted for more than an hour. http://www.boatoutfitters.com/horizontal-rod-holders-with-seasucker-vacuum-mount?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=255-0016&gclid=Cjw...
