Re: Florida Black Bear Season approved
Population estimates from 2011 had the estimated bear population exceeding 3,000. For comparison, Georgia was estimated to have a bear population around 5,000, with a human population of 10 million. Florida's population is nearly twice that, at just under 20 million.

Re: Cobia in Carrabelle
Tidedancer, does C-quarters have the smaller size version? I have the larger one for offshore, but wouldn't mind picking up a smaller one for the flats boat.

Re: Trolling for grouper
I like to thread a swivel onto the eye of whatever lure I'm trolling with, and then tie line-to-line. I usually use 80lb mono or fluorocarbon as leader material, and rarely have a problem losing kings when fishing with deep-diving plugs.

Every time I've ever been, I've seen large bass boats on the river. You should be fine.

Question on grouper regs...
I've been out of the offshore game for several years, but have now the opportunity to get back out there. As I understand the reg's for state waters, Gags are open April 1-June 30, and reds are open year round. Federal reg's for gags run July 1-Dec. 2, and reds (and all other shallow water grouper e...

Re: Any news from St. Marks?
My dad and brother fished the river yesterday without any luck. Everyone they spoke to was having the same luck.

Re: Banded FloridaMallard/Mottled duck
Congrats, Barry! It will be interesting to see how old the bird was and where he was banded. I killed one down there two seasons ago that was at least five years old, banded on Loxahatchee.

Re: Question for the local duck hunters
Steve, I don't know what to tell you about the language of the regs for this past season. I don't recall how they've been written in the past, nor how they were enforced this season (as I only hunted lakes with restrictions), but up until at least last season the only bodies of water with restrictio...

Re: Question for the local duck hunters
Danibeth, you can hunt any day of the week in Leon county. It's only Miccosukee, Iamonia, Jackson, Carr and Lafayette that are restricted to MWF/holidays. Also, a 25 shell limit may not accommodate a barnburner duck and coot shoot in the same morning, but how often do you shoot your 15 coots (especi...

Re: Question for the local duck hunters
Because they're public ramps, I doubt the state could implement or enforce it, but I would like to see ramp passes sold/made mandatory during duck season...the proceeds of which could be used to improve the quality of the lake's habitat. Likely will never happen, but it sure would be nice.

Re: Question for the local duck hunters
micci_man...regardless of whether we share the same views, the points you brought up are all ones that need to be discussed and addressed at large. I'm in MS for most of the year now, and even having only hunted over here one weekend this season, I can tell you FL needs to take a page out of the Mis...

Re: Question for the local duck hunters
I would get behind the 25 shell rule and opening Iamonia to 10hp or less (to disperse hunters and make more of Iamonia accessible), and maybe afternoon closures, but just can't see the other rules benefitting the hunters or the ducks. The number of birds using the lake and the quality of hunting has...

Re: How to clean redfish video
red_yakker, the knife is carbon steel and holds an edge very well. Mine has a patina to it now, but no rust. I clean it after every use and will occasionally wipe it down with silver compound. It's been a great all around cleaning knife...I use it for redfish and other large fish, as well as deer.
