Free Cobia Tagging Kits

Post by big bend gyrene »

With numerous recent reports highlighting cobia catches, just thought I would post on cobia tagging.

This past winter I read an article on cobia tagging/research coordinated by the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory out of Mississippi and contacted Read Hendon to inquire on getting a tagging kit. Within a matter of days a free kit was in my mailbox and I've had fun tagging 5 short cobia thus far this year.

The above said, Read said that while tagging for tripletail is somewhat robust in the North Florida area, they would love to have more folks tagging cobia.

To get a free kit you can send e-mail requests directly to Read (be sure to provide your name, address, and a contact number). His e-mail address is:

read.hendon@usm.edu

And definitely be on the lookout for future catches with tags... plan on tagging many more throughout the summer :-)

Thanks for the heads up. I have sent my email requesting a kit. I am looking forward to doing this from a conservation and research stand point. Not to mention, good lesson for the kids. :jester_1

Totally agree with you on the conservation, research, and good lesson points Geaux Fishin!

Data being collected is showing two interesting trends... some fish travel amazing distances in short periods of time while other fish appear to do the opposite staying in a general area.

Here's a REALLY interesting article that mentions some of the data collected to date by Read and the Gulf Coast Research folks...

Can't swear it, but I think that the pamplet sent with the kit mentions that anglers are contacted when the fish they tag are recaught. If true, I can't wait until the day that one of the fish I tag is caught again :D

Don't you have to catch the cobia first? :smt005

Sorry, couldn't resist! :-D
