Fish with sores and cuts

Post by CoastalPirate »

I recently caught and released a 3 pound bass with a good size sore or gash in it and wanted to know, are these fish ok to eat or should you throw them back? It's bugging me because I threw it back because I was afraid of getting sick but I really wanted to fry it up! I caught it at Lake Jackson today. Thanks for the advice!

THINGS LIKE GAORS AND GARFISH CAN SLASH UP A BASS , I WOULD BET THAT IS WHAT HIT YOUR BASS, SKIN THE BASS, BREAD HIM AND THROUGH HIM ON THE GRILL. CUT OUT AROUND AND DEEP CUTS.

As usual Pa is right! Your question brings back to remembrance an old saying, " If in doubt, throw it out!" On the other hand, hot grease will cure about anything but who wants to eat a sore?

Caught this in Lanark a few years ago. Not enough tea in China to make me eat this. Almost certainly not the same as your bass, but I follow the when in doubt throw it out

Never feel bad about putting a fish with superior genetics back!! Only good things can happen.

I'll eat most anything, but Salty Gator, I couldn't eat that one!!!

Ah heck Salty, fry up that Serratia marcescens real hard and you'll be good to go! Does frying destroy biotoxins?

Would not even want to clean that one, let alone eat it!

Most bass with sores on them are usually because they have been caught before and the slime coat was removed by either carpet rash or just from laying them on a measuring board. It's pretty common on Jackson since the fish are heavily pressured and caught several times . The sores shouldn't hurt the eatin, at least no more than all the run off Jackson gets. BTW ,what's the legal length for keeping bass on Jackson now ?
