Where do the pinfish go?

Post by geofish »

I like to fish small pinfish for trout inshore and when I go offshore I like to fill up the livewell with grouper candy (medium size pinfish). But they're tough to find when it gets colder.
Where do the pinfish go? Anyone have a winter strategy for catching 'em?

Always wondered the same thing and your post pushed my curiosity to search, found this link of a study on all things Pinfish:
http://www.fao.org/3/ap947e/ap947e.pdf

Page 20-21 says that most larger pinfish migrate to deeper waters in the winter for either temperature reasons or for spawning, they aren’t 100% sure. Though evidently late fall through early spring is when they spawn. Some pinfish evidently migrate into shallower waters or coastal creeks/rivers for the winter also. Probably harder to catch because it’s colder (lower metabolism) and they might be spawning (other things on their mind).
