Tripletail?

Post by Redbelly »

I want to go after some. What depths are they found in our local flats? I know to fish around crab buoys, but what other places are they found locally?
Thanks!

If you find a line of pots without a boat on it, I’ll buy you a beer.

I've yet to see a single boat fishing pots or any markers for that matter so far...

Never caught a tripletail, only seen a couple.

But once fishing out of Indian Pass I came across several tripletail attractors.
One was a 4x4 sheet of plywood with a crab cork anchored just off the St. Vincent beach.
Another was a crab cork with a swim noodle with netting draping off of it.
I didn't know what it was when I spotted it, so like an idiot a ran right up to it and spooked a huge tt off it.

Anyone ever try that around here?

You must not be looking. Every line from st marks to ochlockonee bay had at least one boat on it last Saturday, mostly by pontoon boats running all over the pots.

Homemade FADs are becoming more popular and the really good ones are meant to look like floating debris. The more growth/algae, the more it attracts bait and TT.

Don't get caught deploying one, though, as they are considered hazards to navigation and would likely earn a ticket.

I caught four recently off crab floats using a 1/4-ounce DOA gold/glo shrimp. Missed a couple more. Biggest was 17 inches but a fun catch. Hope all those pontoons know the legal limits and are releasing the undersize fish to grow bigger.

I’ve seen some pics on social media that would suggest otherwise, one by “a guide” holding a dink , with small flounder ( you know who you are)

I didn't go west, but there certainly weren't any I saw from the bird rack in to the Lighthouse on Saturday between mid-day and 3 or so. Everyone was on the bar relaxing or or drifting the grass. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I caught two shorts(13") yesterday around Aucilla flats. One off a FAD and the other come from under a huge grass mat. Both were caught on gulps.
