Carrabelle Offshore Question

Post by jsaunders »

I've spent 2 weekends in the last month fishing in Carrabelle. Out of the combined 6 days I've been there, I've only been able to get offshore twice (21' bay boat, so it has to be relatively calm). I've fished public, private, and new spots from 30ft to 55ft of water using squid, live pinfish, live grunts, live blue runners, LYs, etc. I cannot seem to find any snapper or grouper. Am I fishing too shallow? Wrong bait? Frustrated....

Are you marking fish on your bottom machine? Snapper are pretty thick from 50’ on out. Personally, I like to chum them up and freeline chunks into the slick. You can also catch them bottom fishing when you are targeting grouper. You may need to go a little deeper (60-70+ feet) and watch your bottom machine. It will light up like a Christmas tree if you go over a good wad. Bait doesn’t matter, if they are fired up, they will eat a fly. Pick your days, be safe and avoid the full moon. Good luck

Yea, when I'm over structure there's plenty of fish on the sonar. We caught some sea bass and grunts off the spots we fished but nothing else. Guess I'm gonna have to get lucky and get a flat day so I can run further offshore. Thanks for the tips.

I’m not sure about everyone else, but when we’re in snapper , we aren’t catching any grunts or sea bass. Get out a little deeper if it’s nice and you will find some. Also maybe keep an eye out for a used chum churn. Good luck
Edit, I see snapper season is over on Friday. I guarantee when the season is out, you’ll be in the pigs

I will also add make sure you are over the structure. If you miss it by a few feet you’ll be out of the fish. If I’m not sure I’ll make short cast all around the boat until something happens. If your catching those small reef fish you could be off the spot a little. Earlier this year we had two boats on one spot. We were literally 10’ apart and dropping down in between boats. My boat caught 10 of the 12 snapper.
