Local shore fishing spots in Wakulla/Tallahassee

Good evening:

I've been in the Tallahassee/Crawfordville area for about ten years and haven't fished much at all since coming here. I grew up in Okeechobee fishing on freshwater lakes and canals, but never did much saltwater or river fishing.

My kids are 5 and 6 and I've decided it's time to start fishing again and teaching them and also on my own. I'm in crawfordville and near Wakulla Springs but I'm not familiar with many easy access fishing spots that would be appropriate for young kids.

My first thoughts are Piney Z or Mashes Sands pier but I'd love some other options that would be good for kids. I'm good with freshwater, but also interested in learning saltwater.

I'll eventually pick up a skiff of some sort to fish the flats and rivers, but I'm going to take it slow and learn the area and what kind of fishing I like before purchasing.

I'm reading through this forum and there is a wealth of information, so thank you all for all the helpful information you post here.

Do I mark this post as spam since this is a "phishing" attempt?? :D (couldn't help myself)

Perfect time of year to get started. Mashes Sand pier, backside of St George, Bald Point, etc.. get some shrimp on a 3/0 circle hook, 18" of 25lb leader, swivel, 1/2 to 3/4 oz weight and cast that thing out.

Another GREAT option is to book a half day trip with a local guide tight now to learn the specific area you want to start fishing in, even if you'll be on foot for a while.

Definitely looking at charters, but I'm trying to get my wife and kids down with the basics (baiting a hook, patience, etc.) Before we go down the guide road. Definitely in the plans though.

Thanks for the guidance, much appreciated.

several spots near the lighthouse or boat ramp parking lot at St Marks are good for fishing from shore; Be careful around the sharp oyster shells if kids are little.
Closer to town, I think there's a little dock by the boat ramps at Williams Landing or Coe Landing on the southern side of Lake Talquin (off 20, blountstown hwy). Good for starting kids out with bobber fishing, and people catch bream, catfish, and the occasional crappie there.
Good luck!

One of my favorite spots this time of year are in the St Marks Refuge @ the lighthouse. You can park at end and dead ahead are the grass flats. Topwater will work well and of course live bait. There's tons of fiddler crabs in the sand around there. Bring something to sift them. You can also park at the boat ramp and walk the hiking trail and fish the oyster bars at the mouth of the river. Either way wear water shoes. This is the oyster bar spot. https://goo.gl/maps/MCpt4cS5mzk2SQpg8

I like wakulla beach too just because it's easy access and quiet. I do think there's going to be more fish around the lighthouse right now though.

There's countless small lakes in the apalachicola national forest that have never even had a lure casted into them(maybe not that but you know). The lakes are shallow and dry up every 5 years or so.. The bass wont be big but there's alot of them.

There's a little fishing dock in st marks near the yacht club(it's a park) and the whole area is pretty laid back about fishing. Mostly bass around there but plenty of redfish around.

Fish the beach at mashes sands or alligator point. I've never fished alligator point but i've had success here https://goo.gl/maps/ggyf3vxUJEZKE1uo6. You can also fish bald point. In that same area you can fish under the 98 bridge on the west side of ochlockonee bay.. I've caught black drum there.

A kayak will open up alot of opportunities and i'd argue you'd probably catch more fish vs in a boat. I'm just lazy though. A jon boat with a trolling motor would work really well too.

I just found out about the Wakulla River Park and of course I’m always looking for a new mullet fishing spot.

There are more bank fishing places around here than anywhere else on Earth. I’m not the flats fishing expert but a friend of mine caught 2 Trout of the bank at Hickory Mound and you might have seen my story about my other friend who caught the Trout feeling frisky at the Ecofina ramp the other day.
