St Marks NWR -26 Oct 2014

Post by Terrier »

Fished the refuge from 8:00 AM - 1:00PM. Very bright, clear day with a good moving tide early. Didn't do much with fly rod at the wash bar - just got a nice jack and that was it. Some FSU students were fishing at the end of the bar with free lined shrimp and were catching loads of rat reds, although they did catch a nice keeper. After the tide began to stand, I waded over to Long Bar and fished the grass flats. Got two good 18" trout on clousers (chartruse and olive and olive/chart./white). I stayed a bit too long on the bar and almost had to swim back to shore.

The water is very clear and I think the fish may be leader shy, especially if it's calm, so you may have to downsize terminal tackle.

Both trout had been eating what looked like pinfish

Sweet!
To fish, or not to fish, . . . those are the answers.
