St Marks NWR - 19 Dec 2014

Post by Terrier »

Fished the refuge this afternoon - weather was cloudy to ptly cloudy, with a few moments of sun. The water is very clear and cool - but not cold. Couldn't find much activity today; tried Sand Cove and the creeks around to Minnie Cove but nothing. Paddled out to Long Bar and eventually got a good strike and a great fight on the 6 wt I was using. Had a good struggle getting the fish alongside the kayak. I was thinking upper slot red but it turned out to be a foul hooked black drum, a good chunky fish that must have been attracted to the fly but missed. It was hooked near the dorsal fin, so it doesn't count but it was a great fight. After the tide turned and began to run out, I got a 17" trout on a small blue/black clouser. That was it for the day.

Sounds like a whole lot better than nothing, and even better than working.
