Bass Pro Shops Fly Tying Class

Post by Bass Pro Shops »

Exciting News from the Fly Shop - More Fly Tying Materials and the start of Monthly Tying Classes! We have expanded our selection of fly tying materials due to increased interest from the fly tying community. New products will continue to be added over the coming weeks. We are also starting our Monthly Fly Tying Classes starting Sunday, September 24 from 2-4 PM. Classes will alternate between freshwater and saltwater fly patterns. One of our Bass Pro Associates, who has a long history of fly tying, will be conducting the class this month. There will be a small materials fee for the class. Those that are interested in participating in the class should plan on bringing their own vise, tools, and white thread. Space is limited, so please contact an associate in the Fishing Department at (850)402-6900 to sign up for the class.

For any of you that have kids this is a great activity. Andrew and I tied flies when he was a lot younger and then fished with them at the coast and in the pond behind our house. The kids get a big thrill out of catching a fish on something they created.

We enjoyed it enough that Andrew wanted to make lures for casting tackle, so I purchased a small wood lathe and we turned some Zara Spook style top water plugs from red cedar we picked up down at the coast. The fly tying skills will allow you to put feather trailers on the rear hooks of any of your spoons or lures.

We ended up catching some respectable sized reds and trout on our home made cedar plugs. Especially around the Econfina and Spring Warrior areas.
