Oyster flats question

Still have a lot to learn. Last couple fishing excursions have ended on oyster bars at last of high tide. Have been casting to larger fish with their dorsal fins out of the water with no success. Can't identify species. Seeing several in the general area at a time, not loners. Some smaller fish also that might be back drum. Other than redfish or black drum, any other candidates?

I'd say both are probably correct. Might be some mullet in the mix. Both sheepies and black drum are finicky but they will eat a small crab or shrimp pattern fly. A weed guard will help when casting over the bars themselves.

At times, you will see gar out on the flats also. They move sort of slow and make a mild, crooked wake only for a short distance.

The op asked for other candidates that's why I threw out sheepie. I'd bet they were drum, but I have seen sheepies tail on oyster bars. Right time of year for them also. But as SK said a shrimp or crab imitation should catch both (and reds). Good luck
