Downloading Waypoints from Garmin 2006C

Post by Vitz »

I'm upgrading my GPS and need to download the waypoints from my old 2006C, store them on a SD, and then upload them to a new GPS. I've read online that you have to have an old Garmin card reader and an old Garmin disk, as well as an older laptop to read the card reader. Does that sound right? Anybody have one of these units that could help?

Try a software called "Expert GPS". I have used it for years with Garmin and had no trouble.

Humminbird is a different story. I can download Humminbird points, but then they won't go back into the combo unit.

I just updated my ExpertGPS program to the latest version. I don't see a Garmin 2006C on the available units list under "Options" / Add a new gps unit. You may want to email Dan Foster, the owner of Expert GPS and see what he recommends.

I'm in the process of upgrading my Garmin unit and also work on a Mac, which hasn't been compatible with the Garmin software in the past.

The senior marine specialist who has been helping me sent these links. The Homeport app is free and it is Mac-friendly. Hope this solves your problem. I'm waiting to see if they can power up my old unit to transfer my numbers to the new one.

He may be dealing with the old style proprietary Garmin memory stick drive which requires a special reader and pre-Windows 7 os if I recall correctly.

The 2006C worked with Garmin old software. It was called map source. Call Garmin tech help and the will help you. Homeport recognized the GDB file. You will need to download Map Source and update it.

Garmin Basecamp is a free online download, and I have used it numerous times to download and upload from various Garmin devices without much issue. Similar to Garmin MapSource, but not sure if it is compatible with the unit you have.

I've also had luck with online converter tools, MN DNR has a particularly good one but it is difficult to use. GPX visualizer is another great program, with an easy online video tutorial showing those who aren't tech savvy (like me!) just how to do it. Again, hit a miss depending on the file you are bringing in, but sometimes I've been able to convert it to KML, KMZ or GPX and reopen in GoogleEarth or Basecamp with it working. It can also convert to text, which I have done once from a very old unit. Huge pain going through the text, but I was able to find the coordinates and manually enter them back into Basecamp or GoogleEarth to upload later.

This is what I'm reading other places online. I have no Garmin memory stick, cable or card reader only the GPS. I'm going to try to call Garmin tech support and see what i can find out. In the meantime, if anybody has one of these older units and has the Garmin memory stick, cable and card reader that I could borrow, please let me know.

Send me the unit and I will return it with an SD card and the numbers. If you see me fishing one of the numbers, you should move away, I was there first.

I have the 110 power cable with USB. You can have it. You can borrow the disk with Mapsource but I need to keep it. I still use the program with my handhelds.
I might be coming through Tally tomorrow, but I'm not sure yet.

Thanks for the offers. It someone's suggestion I called Garmin tech support and they offered me another option. Since I have another, more recent, Garmin unit that accepts SD cards they said I could hardwire the 2 units together, transfer the waypoints to the newer unit and then download them to an SD card. Hardwiring was simply a matter of connecting the blue wire from one machine to the brown wire from the other. It worked perfectly and I have the waypoints from the old machine now downloaded onto an SD card. Thank for your offers and responses and thanks to Garmin tech support. They were very helpful.

Glad you were able to retrieve your waypoints, Vitz. Garmin does have great customer service. They were able to power up my locked up unit, download my data and are mailing a SD card back to me.

I did this a couple month ago. I needed to get an SD card that was 3GB or less. couldn't find one locally so had to order one on-line. You also need to download HomePort from the Garmin Web site if you want the info on a computer. If you call their Garmin Tec support they will walk you through it as they did for me.
