Redemption is so Sweet!

Postby red_yakker » March 9th, 2010, 9:51 am

I took my buddy Seth fishing Sunday afternoon. We decided to run south to some clean water in hopes of finding large quanities of gator trout. We fished for almost 6 hours, covered just under 10 miles of coastline, and managed one slot-sized trout about 150 yards from the ramp about 30 minutes before we called it quits. :smt011

I woke up Monday morning and went to work. I checked the weather and tides, made a few calls to some buddies, consulted the notes and decided I just couldn't stand it anymore. I called Seth around 11:00 and woke him up  (must be nice, wish I got a Spring Break). "Let's do it again buddy. This time no Gulps!, and let's forget the clear water, that's what everyone else is doing, and most of them aren't doing any better than us."

We hit the water around 2:15 in the Riverhawk, and Seth hooked in to a fatty on his first cast. 19+ inches, nice. 2 hours later, we both had our limit, with one just over 20 inches and 3 over 19. :-D Of course I lost the biggest fish of the day at the side of the boat. :smt010 It was pretty consistent action. We were both throwing twitch baits, his gold, mine silver. There were multiple explosions on top of the water, airborn trout, missed hits that resulted in 2nd and 3rd hits,.... All the things that make for an awesome day of trout fishing.

I'm glad I was able to talk Seth into giving me another chance, Redemption is oh so sweet!

Went back again yesterday evening with my buddy Ben from work. We had eight trout pretty quick (not counting the 3 or 4 that ben lost at the boat due to bent treble hooks), then it just turned off all of a sudden. Almost nothing for about thirty minutes while the sun was setting, then,.........Wham!, Wham!, Wham!, Wham!, Wham!, Wham! We must have have caught thirty fish in 15 minutes, and some of em were Nice'uns!

It was the most intense bite I have ever experienced! Trout were going off all around us! I would hate to have been a little baitfish trying to make my way through that feeding frenzy!

We both started with Cotton Cordell Redfins, then Ben swithced to a Super Spook Jr., and I switched to a sub-surface walk-the-dog bait, no one seemed to out-perform the other, although I think Ben was having more fun with the top-water.

If this keeps up, you tournament guys are gonna put on one heck of a show in April!

Well, depends on what you mean by pretty shallow. 3-4 feet, I wasn't having much luck at all any shallower than that.

I don't mind fishing that deep if that's where the fish are.
