Went down to the coast late Friday with a buddy to clean up the house. Launched the boat and got run off the water by lightning so we went to Hamaknockers. Love those smoked wings. Checked my fishing log and made our game plan for the morning. Ran out about 7 am to pretty nice conditions but overcast skies. Headed for my first spot and found a boat already sitting there. Plan B was formulated on the fly and we ended up seeing some surface activity on the way and stopped to fish. Water was pretty shallow 3-4 feet and tannin stained. Since it was calm and overcast, we threw topwaters the whole time. The reports had been poor so we had low expectations, but we had a great day. We had to wade through a bunch of trash fish (mostly ladies and hardtails but a few sharks and one bluefish that weighed about 5 pounds) plus shorts, but we finished with 9 trout from 17-22.5". We saw a bunch of big sea turtles and a few small ones plus two big bull sharks. One swam under the boat right below me and the other cruised by on the surface with his fin out pushing a big wake. There is no telling what kind of underwater carnage was going on, but all of the predators were there. Pretty sure we could have converted one of the ladies or a hardtails into a big shark, but it is hard to leave the topwater bite. Very cool day. Saw a bunch of Spanish jumping, but never landed one. We tried 3 other spots heading in without getting a bite. On the trailer by noon and home for dinner.
