SGI - March 14th-16th

Post by Willie »

Fished out of the state park on Thursday and Friday. Planned to stay in the kayaks and fish Saturday but the north wind was brutal. Ended up surf fishing and caught a pile of whiting, some early Pompano and a nice flounder off the beach.

Both Thursday and Friday had good bites in the morning and afternoon. Trout were deeper in the morning (4-6 feet). Only thing that worked for us in the morning was bouncing a gulp on a jig head off the bottom. When it warmed up in the afternoon we found the fish running the deeper side of the bars on the incoming tide. Voodoo shrimp and weighted swimming mullet are what was hitting on the incoming tides. Only trout though; 3 of us were fishing and never caught a red.

Good number of shorts early but nicer fish in the afternoons. Overall it was a great couple of days. Water temps right around 65.
Thursday - 10 trout - 21 and 19.5 were the best fish.
Friday - 14 trout - 19, 21 and 22.5" were the best fish.

Should start to pick up in a few weeks.

Thanks for the report! We will be down the 26th for a few days. Going to attempt a few pompano from a boat... never tried it this way. Has anyone else?
