St Marks 5-4

Post by Srbenda »

Got out early and hit the Apalachee bay around 730, and unfortunately, the weather forecast was right with a steady wind out of the south at 10+. We headed west to tuck in behind one of the sandbars, and began with a few shrimp. We got 1 or 2 keepers on the shrimp, but the pinfish seem to be in full force, and the bait quickly vanished.

Switched to Gulps under corks, which worked well, and then to DOA's under corks. Also picked up several larger trout on a pearl jerkbait. The bite was steady throughout the day, and we'd lift the power pole every few minutes and drift north as needed.

We did put out a pinfish on a flatline behind the boat, and after an hour, we got a solid hit. I had no wire on the hook, but it was pulling stronger than a trout, and I expected a large redfish, but after a few minute battle, we landed a 24"+ sting ray. I was a bit surprised that he would hit such a large live pinfish, but there he was.

Also picked up a flounder bouncing a gulp along the bottom.

A very nice day with good size trout, we threw back plenty of shorts and even a few 15's.

  Great report, thanks for posting. A South wind must help, we fished a stiff East wind on Thursday and didn't do that well. :-?

East seems to churn the water more
Much cloudier...

The south wind waves get blocked by the sandbars on the west flats. I think that helps.
