St Marks 5-11

Post by Srbenda »

Headed out to a very stiff breeze this morning, well beyond what the weatherman had forecasted. Nonetheless, the west flats were beckoning, and we were going to go.

Started in about 5' of water on an outgoing tide, and very quickly boated a sailcat and a nice flounder. I decided to keep the sailcat, since someone recently suggested they were good to eat.

We kept a fairly steady bite through the morning, with trout, bluefish, and ladyfish. There were definitely some short trout, but overall some good eating.

As the tide went out we headed back into deeper water, and the bite stayed steady. We had a pinfish out on a flatline, and twice had something bite, but not get the hook.
Around 2pm, we came across a school of blue runners, and had fun with them for a few minutes, as they were biting almost anything that you threw at them. However, there were bigger fish on the outskirts of the school, and in short order, we got sharked once, and then lost a very big trout boat side.

Finally, we hooked up with something solid, and fought a 32" redfish for awhile, before we got the photo opp.

Not a bad day on the water, as the wind finally died down to something bearable, and it stayed partly cloudy most of the day. No complaints about the quantity or quality of the fish caught. Plenty of 15" trout thrown back to fight another day.

Nice. Figured it was a little sloppy out there with the breezes blowing in town. Good to see the West Flats heating up.

I was out there Saturday too. Only caught 1 keeper trout 18". Tons of little ones. It was definitely rougher than expected.
