Land Survey Civil Engineering firms in Tallahassee?

Post by Geno67 »

I have decided to try to find employment in the Tallahassee area. My wife is an instructor and a PhD candidate at Florida State and will be there for four years at a minimum. They have promised her 24 months of post doc if she wants it (professor pay and work but no benefits).

I have two decades of experience in land surveying (every position except PLS), civil engineering (every position except PE), computer hardware/software/programming, underwater archaeology and GIS. I've owned companies that did masonry work, wildlife management and heavy equipment owner/operator. I retired in 2008 and we went back to school. I now have a degree in computer science, another in underwater archeology and am about halfway through a masters in GIS/geography.

All of that said, what companies should I apply to? Tallahassee only, please.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but got a question for you surveyors... I've got a 60's vintage theodolite and dumpy level I no longer use. Are they worth anything or just paper weights?

Some surveyors restore those things and put them on nice tripod in their lobby for a conversation piece. You may be able to sell them on Ebay or a survey equipment site.

Some state-wide surveyors associations also collect that old equipment. (Florida Surveying and Mapping Society or Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors).

Thanks Steve. I just checked Ebay and didn't see one like it so not sure what they might be worth... The theodolite has been on display in the man cave for years but it's kinda out of place in a "fishing" themed cave. :-D

Good luck to Geno on finding a suitable landing spot. I was going to suggest Meridian but SG beat me to it.

Juan, take a road trip to Vegas and see if Rick on Pawn Stars would buy it.

Seriously, someone like Affiliated Auctions in Tallahassee might be a possibility. GLWS

The thing looks pretty good. You might list it on fleabay and see what happens. Set a reserve at what you would need for it. Or donate it to Steve to display in his office.
