Lake Jackson (Rhoden Cove) 8/19/13

Post by Poopong McPlop »

We put in at Rhoden Cove at 6am this morning. The wind was slight and out of the west and the surface temps were cold and in the mid to low 70s. Ford's arm was clear, much to our surprise. The tussock that was blocking the boat trail was towed or it moved on its own out to open water. We started in the offshore lily pads next to deep open water and the fish were biting as soon as we arrived. We boated about 40-50 fish between 6am and 10:30am with the majority landed between 6 and 8:30am. The bull bluegills, like always, were the first to enter and leave the feeding grounds. They seemed to have left entirely by 8:30am, and the shellcrackers moved out by 11am. We were really helped by the prior days rains which cooled the water down tremendously. The morning feeding time ran into the lunar feeding time which allowed us to catch fish for 3hrs straight, when normally we would have had a 1.5hr feeding window. On the day we caught about 50 fish total, about 8 LMB, 3 catfish, 10-15 Shell crackers and 20 or so Bluegill and we kept about 25-30 fish. Our keepers ranged from just under 8" at the smallest, but the majority were in the 9.5"- 11" range. Our biggest gills were 1.5lb and our biggest shellcracker was 11" and 1.5lb's also. Another great morning at our favorite lake!

No problem, I share much as I know, except for exact spots and one little tiny secret we have that weve noticed makes the the huge gills and big spooky crackers jump on our bait!
