how to figure tides at Crooked Island Sound?

Post by pcbayou »

Can anybody tell me which tide location I'd use to figure high/low times for Crooked Island Sound on Tyndall AFB? Is it closest to Port St. Joe? Panama City pass? East Bay?

I'm trying to find a nice high tide in morning or early afternoon, for launching at the dirt boat ramp there.

The tides for St Andrews Pass should be close. What kind of boat are you launching? I have never had any trouble even on a low tide.

Low tide typically favors most boats at Crooked Island as the "hole" off the end of the boat ramp is about 20 some odd feet (give or take a few) off the shoreline on higher tides.

For tide estimations I use: http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.d ... sites.html and check off "Farmdale" as it is the nearest location to the landing.

Farmdale is my family's old town before the days of Tyndall AFB, and the landing's location is where they operated their fishing business from.

So that's where Farmdale is ... for some reason, I thought it was farther up in East Bay. BayGator, it's a 19-foot Palm Beach, V-hull. There shouldn't be any problem ... just being extra careful, I guess. I was more concerned about getting the boat out than getting it in. I didn't want to have to drive too far into the sound!

It does look like the St. Andrew Pass or Farmdale reading would be close enough.

Thanks for the help, y'all.

Farmdale is north by north east of the landing. Roughly one mile before the landing turnoff. It's a left turn at the fire station as your heading towards Mexico beach, and behind the tree line in that ajacent clearing.

Side note: We went floundering in CIS last night, and did reasonably well fishing at the first cutout to the pass after the white posts. Killed 3 right there at the east side of that cut out with the flounder sitting right on the ledge to the drop off (staying inside the sound). Also, using a 3" new penny ... boated a couple of nice spcs. No worms in them either.

Upon returning to the landing, we were greeted by two friendly TAFB MPs who advised us that the landing is closed to the public 1 hour after dark, and that if we wanted to stay in the sound, we'd have to relocate our vehicles to Mexico Beach.

guh!
