Everything I am finding on google is saying that there really is no repellant for horse fly/deer fly/yellow fly. They have repellants that are effective for horses and such but they are unsafe for human use. Over the weekend I got at least 10 bites. I am wondering if there is anything that works for these fudgesicle bugs.

I understand your pain. Could have done without the cursing. It was just pointed out to me by my 9 year old grandson. He likes to check the fish pictures every day. I guess I got some explaining to do to momma.

In May and June the yellow flies are BAD down here on the forgotten Coast. The only thing I have found that helps is long pants and long-sleeve shirts this time of year. Yes it gets a little warm but it beats being eaten by these little rascals. I have found out that yellow flies like white and black flies like black. So when Y or B are around I dress for success. Success is not getting eaten alive.

Actually they make a product called Utter Balm(AKA Bag Balm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bag_Balm). This is what farmers use to keep the horse flys off their milking cow utters. The Bag Balm version is very sticky and thick but it will most definately keep off the yellow flys. I have personally used it multiple times with no harm, however use at your own risk. There are many human friendly utter creams now available, but I think you need the cow versions to actually keep off the flys and not just moisterrize your skin.

Go to a Doller General and get a bottle of 'Africa's best herbal Oil' put on cloth wipe and into a ziplock. Rub on yourself, yellow flies may land, but they won't bite. Sand Knats get the new Avon skin-so-soft insect repellant.

Take a rag and put Pine Sol on it and keep it in the boat.

I second the Pine- Sol I put it on the rail of the boat, front ta back, when I get ready to back down the ramp
