Dropping crab pots

I've been dropping a crab pot every time I fish (Dickerson and Wakulla on way to St. Marks) and have been using bait ranging from fish to chicken. The pot usually sits five to six hours, being dropped in the morning and have yet to net a single blue crab. Clearly I'm doing something wrong. I don't want to leave it overnight due to risk of theft. Any pointers?

No clue about crabbing on this coast, but is theft really bad here of crab pots left over night?

When I fish bald point I usually have my crab pot with me to soak while I fish from the pier. On several occasions I've been able to bring back some fish and enough blue crabs to feed my roommates and I. I buy bone-in chicken thighs (cheaper than boneless) and after I debone them I save the bones for the crab pot.

I've also seen people use a chicken leg/drumstick on a string and catch a bunch of crabs.

I use the the remains of the fish I clean and always have crabs.

I've always used turkey necks...and we'd leave the pots out over night....

Most times, I've had way more luck leaving them out overnight. There are some locations where the crabs are so think you can hand line them during daylight hours.

Thanks for all the replies. Will give a go this weekend and try soaking at least overnight.

I run three traps all the time off my dock. Use fish carcasses and you’ll do well. Twelve hours (overnight is best) and you should have a few.

Left one out overnight last weekend. I think the location I selected was poor. Will try it again this weekend.
