Is it illegal to accept sympathy money for being notoriously bad at fishing and pretty much everything that involves boat ownership? Asking for a friend...
NOAA reports are the reason I have trust issues.

We had this debate years ago on the Florida Sportsman Forum, which is why I knew how the law read.

Since I don't have a Captain's Lic., if I am every asked - I covered all the expenses associated with any fishing trip in my boat.

Realisticly, I would hope that the "man" would not even ask the question. However I can definitely see a John Morgan attorney going after a person in a wrongful death or injury in case of an accident.
