Pascagoula fishing advice?

Post by geofish »

My son has a little time off from Air Force duties, and we're planning to meet up in Pascagoula next weekend so he can be w/in 8 hours of his base. I'm going to trailer the Wahoo over there, and if weather holds we might even get to experience the 2nd half of Mississippi's red snapper season offshore. If not, we'll try the inshore artificial reefs.
Anybody fish out of coastal Mississippi? General advice, fishing stories, secret honey-holes???

Can't help with offshore, but the barrier islands off Biloxi/Gulfport are really cool and very fishy. Reds, trout, sharks, tripletail and jacks galore. Not too far west of Pascagoula. Short run to the islands from the Small Boat Harbor in Biloxi.

Tell your son thanks for his service.

Your son must be at Keesler(my son just left there) thank him for his service. Good luck fishing. Wish I could give you some advice for fishing over there.

They've had a lot of issues inshore with all the fresh water but the storm helped bring some salt in. If looking in Pascagoula area get on google maps and search for Bayou Heron. There is a launch and then run down to the mouth. Lots of good trout and redfishing. If weather is good you can run out to a few of the islands. If Biloxi, check out the Katrina Reef. Further west head out to Cat Island from Gulfport or Pass Christian.

Great trip, 4 1/2 hour drive, kept boat in slip at Mary Walker Marina in Gautier near Pascagoula. Fished a little inshore, caught a nice mangrove snapper near the jetties, danced with a bunch of ladyfish out by the barrier islands, and on the 2nd day found the red snapper out in 70 ft of water in the middle of Fish Haven #13 (just look for the loggerhead turtle -- she was marking the spot). Caught a bunch that were undersize, plus a few 17 inchers (we kept 2). Another fellow came into the dock just before us with some huge red snapper and amberjack, but he went 70 miles out.
Anyway, the fish are there, and snapper + amberjack seasons are open in Mississippi. Register each trip on their app though, because marine patrol was checking and its a $500 fine if you don't register each time you go out.
I figure the snapper cost me a couple of hundred bucks a pound, but the time with my son was priceless!
