There are some that have been missing for awhile out of Keaton also. What exactly is the purpose of the bird racks? Is it for bird conservation? If so, which birds? And how does it help?

Way back in the day they were used to collect bird poop for fertilizer, all that is left is the wood frames

Bird racks were originally put out there to collect bird droppings for fertilizer or at least that is what an old timer told me.
Its a wonderful day in the neighborhood!

These in the article seem a lot longer than any I've seen around here.

Bird poop hasn't been widely used for fertilizer since the Haber process for synthesizing ammonia was created and commercialized after WW1. It was my understanding that the racks were used for practicing locking onto targets for military planes.

While the haber Bosch process made it possible to synthesize nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are still needed, the bird racks were a source of complete fertilizer in the guano. The NOAA chart says that all the shoals had them and some were used for gunnery practice, but they weren't built for that.
