Bonefishing

Post by Reel Country »

My dad dropped off on his fine combos last night after I mentioned I was going to try to chase a bonefish when we go on vacation at the end of the month. We'll be going after some fish that get little or no pressure, thank goodness b/c I'm not great with a flyrod. anyway, what fly would be ideal for these? I would purchase some on the island, but it's not noted for its fishery, but rather a lot of sail boats.

Gotcha's, Bonefish Critters and Bitters are what I read about alot....I caught my only bone on a SPRO white bucktail jig :-?

If there is a local fly shop stop by and see what's the hot fly

Bitters - http://www.saltwaterflies.com/bbitters.html

Crazy Charlies (kinda like a gothcha) - http://www.saltwaterflies.com/charlie.html

Hope you get one...

no local fly shop or even tackle shop down there. I'm taking some high speed lures to the guy that has taken me out the past two years we've gone down there.
I'll check those sites.

Where are you headed and what size fish will you be chasing? That is really what it comes down to....

"Schoolies" are very easy to fool with a gotcha or crazy charlie. However, I have found that the bigger bones need a little meat on the fly to catch their attention.

Headed to Jost Van Dyke, BVI. There is a small flat between Jost and Little Jost. I've also snorkled the past two years on White Bay and seen numerous small Permit as well.
