Fishing out of Mexico Beach

Hey guys, this is my first post, took me a while to figure out what fish was in the logo! Anyway, I am heading out to Mexico Beach over the weekend with my son and since he is only 5 I was hopeing that you guys could help me out on some fishing and what to use. I was looking at going to crooked island and doing some, I have heard it is very nice. My problem!? I have no clue on what I am doing, what type of bait what type of rod. I am clueless and I really hope that some of you wiser guys can introduce me with, well, some wisdom! I am an avid spear fisher..or should I say, I spear fish about 8-9 times a year when I get to go out. But surf fishing it something I have 0 knowledge about. Will someone please point me in the right direction? Thank you guys!
