Augusta National adds first 2 female members

Post by wevans »

NEW YORK (AP) -- For the first time in its 80-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has female members.

The home of the Masters, under increasing criticism the last decade because of its all-male membership, invited former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore to become the first women in green jackets when the club opens for a new season in October.

Both women accepted.

''This is a joyous occasion,'' Augusta National chairman Billy Payne said Monday.

The move likely ends a debate that intensified in 2002 when Martha Burk of the National Council of Women's Organizations urged the club to include women among its members. Former club chairman Hootie Johnson stood his ground, even at the cost of losing Masters television sponsors for two years, when he famously said Augusta National might one day have a woman in a green jacket, ''but not at the point of a bayonet.''

The comment took on a life of its own, becoming either a slogan of the club's resolve not to give in to public pressure or a sign of its sexism, depending on which side of the debate was interpreting it.

''Oh my God. We won,'' Burk said. ''It's about 10 years too late for the boys to come into the 20th century, never mind the 21st century. But it's a milestone for women in business.''

I would wager that not all of the male members play golf!! The way I see it, if the girls can pay the dues and handle the the heat, all the more power to em   :smt004

Regardless of what your opinion about women at Augusta is, I think it's pretty crappy to call her CongoLisa. She has accomplished a heck of a lot in her life and has worked hard to do it. If you can claim her credentials then maybe you have some cred yourself, but I'll bet she's got you beat. I know she is way over my head. I'm proud to be in a country where a little black girl from Alabama can work hard and do what she has done. And she has done more just being SoS.

Yes, Condoleeza plays golf and is actually a member now at 2 of the most prestigious clubs in the US, read on if you can make out the words, http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2011 ... -interview.
I have no idea whether Darla Moore does or not.

How does it feel to look down on people that are so much your betters?

Barry, if we had a rep-system you would certainly get some + rep right now. Nice work.

I don't really got a dog in this hunt! Several years ago when Augusta National offered me a membership the
negotiations ended abruptly when they said NO WAY to my desire to fish on the course during the Masters....or any other time.

I will make this statement without reservation: Dr. Condi Rice is on the short list of people who most make me
proud to be an American!
It may be that my sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
