Post by Sea Fox »

What tackle is best for snapper? Do you use the same as grouper or lighten up some? Lines, hooks, bait? Next time Im down I would like to target them red snappers and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Sea Fox. 8)

We really had to scale down on Wednesday to get them to bite at all, and even then I had to go to a 2 hook rig to keep them honest. 40# Flouro and 2 /0 circle hooks.

Tom, what size mainline do ya'll use. I understad #40 leader. Two hooks? Drop shot style with weight on bottom? Or rigged like Grouper rig with weight at top?

Rigged like a carolina rig with weight on the top. Then use about 4 feet of flouro snelled to a 2/0 hook, then I tie another 3 inches of flouro and another hook onto the eye of the first hook. Kinda like a stinger rig for kings.

For mainline I was using 50# power pro on one reel until it hosed up, then I switched to my baitrunner and 20# test mono. I preferred the PP but the mono was fun.

Thanks Tom. I pretty much had em rigged right except I tied a 11/ circle hook. Used a 6oz weight. Is that too heavy?

Yep, too much for snapper. It'll be fine for grouper. 4oz leads will be plenty. Probably could get away with 2oz.
