St Augustine lobsters: Saturday 8-30 2014

Just a FUN quick post…
Today we headed offshore approximately 42 miles out of St Augy looking for lobsters. This all started about 2 weeks ago when I was fortunate enough to be invited to dive aboard Dr. Jimmy Glenos’s sweet 48 foot Buddy Davis named Major Adjustment. Aboard were good friends Dr. Woody Domingoes and Scott. Conditions were simply outstanding and you couldn’t have asked for a better day on the water! On the way out the seas were calm with an 8 second swell and we made good time at 29 knots.
In a nutshell, we did two dives each working ledges at 129 feet. There were a number of large lobsters there but quite a few were bearing eggs. It was tough as most of the lobsters were tucked back within the ledge and it was difficult to see if they had eggs or not. Sometimes you had to catch em only to find that they had eggs and then release them. A number of them were tucked quite a ways back inside the ledges and getting to them was not possible. There was video taken but with this early report I’m not sure how it turned out just yet.

A very sweet boat!!
Dive Conditions: Bottom temperate was 78 ˚F with 40 feet horizontal visibility at 129 feet. The current was moderate and there was no thermocline (!!). You began seeing the bottom (129 feet) starting at 82 feet. We did not see many fish with only a couple of small hogs, one good sized mutton snapper and only one chark; a 6 foot nurse. At each ledge there were a number of large lionfish and a number of eels too. All dives were on natural bottom ledges.
We couldn’t have asked for better conditions and it was a great way to start the holiday weekend off!
