Fished the river first time yesterday. Fish seemed scattered, but pretty decent action with trout, ladies, and 1 bass.

Thanks for the report. Were you strictly fly fishing or spin? What flies were working?

Heard from the Shields Marina ladies that plenty of trout were being caught in the river, including some whoopers. With the water so chilly, they'll likely remain there despite this week's modest warming trend. FSU Marine Lab at St. Teresa shows Gulf temps at 51 degrees this morning. Unfortunately, I've also heard of wide-spread fish kills, including snook, around Crystal River and Indian River Lagoon. Jim Smith and Gary Droze have reported personal sightings at the Wacassa River and East River pools, respectively.

Fished fly only. Started with a used beat up clouser, black over orange, and after it finally was shot an all black clouser. Fished from the fort to about a mile down. There, the waves were breaking over the bow of the yak and cowardice got the better part of valor...

Thanks.

Been there, done that in the yak. Nothing worse than a wet butt in the winter.

Next time you might try launching at Newport and going down. Only problem is paddling back against the current but at least you're protecting from the wind. Sounds like a lot of fish stacked up beyond the power plant.
