The tax man just paid us a visit. He was hungry.....

Hooked this 18" trout on a topwater and 7' shark skyrocketed out of the water and cut him in half.Image

Looks like a 9" trout to me.

We have had to leave biting reds because of sharks. very frustrating. It is wild to see a red jump out of the water like a ladyfish. Lets you know what is happening.

On a side note, what do y'all do when that is happening? Our best results have been to open the bail and let the red run, maybe outrunning the shark. Better than 50% with that technique for us.

There were sharks all over the flats when we were there. Bait was everywhere, so I guess that brought in the sharks. Opening the bail and letting the fish escape sounds like a good plan. In this case, I had no idea the shark was there until he came out of the water with my trout in his mouth.

Besides free spooling, stomping on the deck or turning the engine over will sometimes work to scare off sharks.

Cranking the engine is a good thought. Never tried that. My nephew, who is a very large man, was stomping the deck trying to get his red in one time. Thought he was gonna put a hole in the deck! :o If the dummy netting the fish (that would be me) had got him on the first pass, we would have landed a whole red instead of a half one. We cleaned what was left. He said there was just enough for him to have a sandwich. :smt010
