Removing diesel soot from transom?

After every trip soot from the exhaust covers the transom of the boat. This stuff won't wash off with soap and water. I've been using 3M wax and cleaner. It takes it off but it's a job. Any one have a better way?

Gary at Bridge Marine fixed us up with a new starter this week. I must say that they are on the ball. The boys started working on the boat as soon as Sea Tow dropped us at the dock around 4:30 Saturday afternoon. Left C-Quarters at 6:15 headed to the S tower. Was surprised by to wind and white caps ...

Took Tom's advise and headed out to the O tower. Lots of good shows but no fish. Went back to 42' and picked up six blacks and about a dozed big sea bass. Got three of the blacks on a squirrel fish - our one and only live bait of the day. Will try to fill up the live well before the next trip!
