Re: Stinger Rig for Cobia/Shark
Thanks y'all I appreciate it. I have been having issues with a dropping a pinfish where the fish only takes the head or tail. I was thinking 2 hooks, 1 front and 1 back would be helpful. Yes, those pesky small sharks will bite a bait in half and a kingfish stinger rig can help. Or use a smaller bai...

Re: Power Poles
Reviving the discussion to get some input, as I am going to get a blade. Decision is between an 8' and a 10' Blade model. Price difference no big deal to me. Dealer says 10' has better transom mount, better hoses, and better pump. Of course can work in 2' deeper water. But, it sticks up high, a lot ...

Re: GPS questions from a primitive fisherman
The navionics app works when you are out of cell range. Thanks for correcting my post. I never knew the app could do that! As long as the map itself is previously downloaded and you have a phone with gps (most do) works without cellular. Amazing to me, but cool. [THUMBS UP SIGN] EJ Sent from my iPa...

Re: GPS questions from a primitive fisherman
Two observations: app is a good idea if where you fish has good cell coverage. If spotty, it won't help when you might need it most. Secondly, a gps unit with built in chart plotter is the best alternative. I have a handheld with the same NOAA charts that are on the bigger units. It's my backup or f...

Re: Power Poles
Congrats on the new ride and PP, Pirate. One thing I did with mine on the Bayshore was leave the spike just above the water when drifting or working spots short distances apart. That way it doesn't take long to deploy and there's less noise to spook the fish. And EJ, I had the 8-foot model and it w...

Power Poles
Depends on several factors, including bottom type, wave action and where it's mounted. Realistically probably about 6-7 feet. With your boat size and weight, you might want to consider the 10-foot model, which would add another foot or so of depth capability and holding power. There are a few Power...

Re: New Gag and Snapper Seasons
I just read the new Regulations for the Snapper and Gag seasons set by FWC. Now the argument with wife to buy a offshore boat. Happy days this year for offshore fishing! Don't regret not buying an offshore boat. Florida regulations are moderately relevant depending on where you fish. West of apalac...

Re: Lanark, Oh Crap and Seatow
I almost needed them yesterday myself, spun a prop 14 miles from ramp. I called to let them know I was going to idle in but to keep an eye out if I couldn't make it. Lady on the phone was very profesional. That was the first time I've ever had to call them since being a member(7 years). ***For thos...

Re: Amberjack to close
I just did a back of the envelope calculation of about how many AJ would have to be caught to equal that harvest figure. Probably over 100,000. That's an absurd harvest figure.

Re: Amberjack to close
Not that one anglers anecdotal experience is typical for the gulf, but I haven't caught and kept a legal AJ for two seasons. And no one else I know has, either. A ton of sublegals that will hit almost anything, but that's it. So, 1.6 million lbs of AJ harvested by anglers last year in the GOM? That'...

Re: Amberjack to close
Yes. The radio was NOAA weather radio and I then looked at the GMFMC website to read the full press release. Apparently the Feds are closing 2017 based on recreational harvest "exceeding the 2016 quota", which they subtract from the following year. Quite sure we will still be able to "...

Amberjack to close
Just heard over the radio that the recreational amberjack harvest in federal GOM waters will close on March 21 for the rest of the year.

Re: New Red Snapper Study
Thanks. Snapper aside, it would be pretty easy for you to ease out off of St Marks for some spring gags, even on a flats boat. Our "offshore vessel" for the rigs 9 miles off of Venice was a carbon fiber tunnel hull Maverick. We nailed big snapper, cobia, mackerel, and giant red drum out th...
