Re: Trout breeding size

  ^^^^^ That publication gives everything you need to know about trout reproduction and size at maturity. I am currently working under the scientist who did this research and conducted most of the research on spotted seatrout reproduction in the GOM. As far as what "size"...

Re: My First Spearfishing Video

Thanks Uncle Lex! They're absolutely delicious and definitely in my top three fish to eat. All white meat with a great taste.

Re: My First Spearfishing Video

Thanks SK! Those lionfish were monsters, two were 10mm away from the state record. That zookeeper is able to hold about 25-30 decent sized lionfish at a time once you release the extension. Fortunately the market is becoming pretty great for fresh lionfish. My buddy, Alex Fogg, just finished up his ...

My First Spearfishing Video

This was taken over in Mississippi where I am currently pursuing my Masters. We dove a couple of rigs and I decided to carry the pole spear and clean up a few lionfish on the rigs.

Re: Amberjack length requirement to change?

I couldn't tell you the reasoning behind this new regulation and why the population is regarded as "overfished". Most likely the annual qouta was passed or fish were being depleted at rates that fishery would lose sustainability. I am but a lowly graduate student who isn't quite high up en...

Re: Amberjack length requirement to change?

I hope I'm not too late on this but I can give a bit of insight into the biology of this fish. Greater Amberjack is a very popular sport fish species along the entire Gulf of Mexico. Like many of the reef fish in the Gulf, their specific reproductive activities are not well known. One thing that has...

Re: Fish ID Help - What is it ???

Definitely a member of the sea bass family (serranidae). My guess would be Bank Sea Bass. Found in Florida waters and has the same identifying characteristics as the fish in the picture. Here is a link to a species description from FWC http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/saltwater/sea-bass/ba...

I'm interested in it for sure. These Mississippi reds love chewing feathers and fur.

Re: Now you are FORCED to take a survey to get a license

I'm with Jhults on this one.... I can't imagine how getting a FREE permit and taking 1 minute out of your time to take a survey can be construed as an "invasion" or "hassle" of any kind. With the past 10 years of controversy in reef fish management I am glad to see a survey in wh...

Re: Chucktown... aka Charleston, SC

Never fished Charleston but I would enjoy the fact that not only are you close to a productive coastal fishery but you are also near great coldwater trout fisheries. Also, I have recently moved to south Mississippi for a research assistantship studying red snapper reproduction off the Mississippi co...

Re: Chokoloskee/10K Islands Camping Trip

Me and a couple of buddies from UGA did the exact same trip last year except we went during spring break. Its awesome man, one of the best fishing experiences I've had. Not only are the fish fun but being in that ecosystem away from buildings, concrete and lights is truly wild. Watch out for the rac...

Re: Seagrass Loss at Econfina

I know I'm getting to this post a little late, but in my opinion the loss of seagrass at Econfina is as many of you pointed out freshwater flows. The high flows in the spring not only brought in tannins, but also all amounts of organic matter and sediments from the mainland. This was at the time in ...

I completely agree SK, if the opportunity ever arises to go there again or maybe to work down there I wouldn't hesitate to go.
