Re: East River

So if I launch near where the original poster said (near the spillway about 1/4 mi from the main 59 highway) at low tide in the early AM, will I be fighting a strong current out into the flats near the lighthouse all day? Low tide is 8ishAM and High tide is 2ishPM. I wouldn't plan on getting out of ...

Re: Hickory Mound launch

The paddle wasn't as long as I thought it would be. A point of reference I used was some lookout tower East of the creek entrance in the impound area. That helped in guiding me. At different points I could also see the vehicles parked at the launch, so that helped as well. We came back in about 2 h...

Re: Hickory Mound launch

Thanks for the input everyone. I got out about 2 hours after low tide and got out to open water with no problems. The paddle wasn't as long as I thought it would be. A point of reference I used was some lookout tower East of the creek entrance in the impound area. That helped in guiding me. At diffe...

Re: Hickory Mound launch

Yikes. Ok. It doesn't look like that far of a paddle, but I believe you. For tomorrow (4/4), low tide is 6:30am and the only High is 1:30pm. What time do you recommend getting there to safely get out and back in before the next low tide (6:45pm)? Thanks for the info. Very much appreciated...

Re: Just a heads up: Taylor Co boatramps are closed

So I have it on good authority from a source at FWC that all WMAs are open for business (minus 3 counties in FL - and Taylor is NOT one of them). I'm still not sure how a local county commissioner's decision can supersede the Governor...Either way, I'm going fishing tomorrow :) It's gonna be a beaut...

Hickory Mound launch

Can anyone tell me if I arrive at Hickory Mound at low tide, will I be able to paddle out via kayak to open water - or should I wait until the tide comes in some so I don't get stuck/have to portage/wade thru mud, etc? Never been there before so looking for a little guidance.

Thanks, TF

Re: St. Marks Refuge - Staying Open?

Not sure how old this notice is, but I would imagine something like this would be updated pretty quickly if it DID change...https://www.fws.gov/nwrs/threecolumn.aspx?id=6442460774 Status Update Out of concern for the health of our staff, volunteers, and visitors, all refuge tours, classes, and other...

Re: St. Marks Refuge - Staying Open?

I gotta teach weekdays. We are video conferencing our classes at Maclay. Until I put the finishing touches on my life-size cardboard Mr. Droze replica, I'm stuck behind a laptop camera. Or... I wonder if I can just bring my laptop down to the Refuge with me? Tomorrow is Saturday. Just sayin' lol :l...

Re: St. Marks Refuge - Staying Open?

Even if the SMNWR ramp is closed, the refuge levees are starting points for great wadefishing. If you can work around the gators and snakes (mostly nonpoisonous) and stingrays and feral hogs, the reds and overslot seatrout are there aplenty. Take a walk on the wild side. What time are we leaving to...

Re: St. Marks Refuge - Staying Open?

Anyone know if the Wakulla Beach launch is open or not? I would like to practice my social distancing this weekend and can think of no better place! Meanwhile, back to my question (lol). I will most likely head down that way this weekend if I am unable to find anything online. I'll post what I find...

Trout near Lighthouse/St. Marks River

Caught these bad boys on Sunday. Must have been a school coming through as the kayaker to my left caught 5 in about an hour and I (only) caught 4 lol! Good day on the water. They are definitely active. And it was a great day to be on the water to boot! THIS is why we live in FL! Happy Thanksgiving! ...

I didn't know Jerry personally but have enjoyed his columns throughout the years in the Democrat. Just wanted to pass along the info to the forum.
