Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
Anything to watch out for on the Apalachicola river? Figure I can launch at Estiffanulga and then travel upstream from there.

$320 for the rock guard, skeg replacement, and prop repair.

Re: Skeg replacement
Solid work from Porters, and that rock guard is a beast.

Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
Thanks for the folks that have suggested the Navionics app. Just perused the Wakulla River with it and this is exactly the kind of stuff I was looking for. Being able to gauge depth in a location really helps to navigate areas.

Re: Skeg replacement
Located in Tallahassee.
Dropped it off with Howard yesterday. Kinda hard to argue with the unanimous suggestion to use Porters.

Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
It has been at least a decade since I had been on the St. Marks and Wakulla river with my folks.

Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
I do like the Shields marina because of the services there. I remember my dad refusing to use it because there was no way he was going to pay to use a ramp, so we used to launch at the fort. I do appreciate the input, and I'm pretty familiar with channel markers (feels a lot like trail markers ...

Re: Good areas for a novice "captain"
I completely agree with you, but this is the family boat and if this is what I've got to use at this time then it's what I'm going to use. My options right now are to either use this boat or to have no boat.

Good areas for a novice "captain"
I know this is primarily a fishing forum, but I can't imagine folks here aren't familiar with good general boating areas around Tallahassee.
I've got a 19' I/O open cabin runabout. I've been on Lake Talquin, the Wakulla River, and the Flint River. I broke the skeg in both Talquin and Flint, so I ...

Re: Skeg replacement
Hold up, I meant they only work out outboards, not I/O. I'll edit my post to reflect that.
Interesting on the cost. 100% called Porters in Woodville - (850) 421-1490
I was just feeling hesitant as the skeg is pretty much completely gone when the skeg guard got ripped off, and it's my dad's boat so ...

Re: Skeg replacement
Just called them. Said they mostly work on outboards (this is a stern drive) but that they could get it done same day, for probably around $250.
Can't argue with that.

Re: Skeg replacement
I've heard about that shop, and that the original owner (Wavel?) retired and his son (Howard?) took it over within the past couple of years. They still pretty solid, then?
(Thanks for the recommendation.)

Skeg replacement
I knocked the skeg something good while on my last jaunt going North on the Flint river. Knocked the skeg guard clean off and took the bulk of the remaining skeg with it. Gonna need a new one welded on. Anyone familiar with a shop in the area that can weld on a new skeg and not melt the lower gear ...
