Re: St Marks 10/23
Flyrodc, I had a good conversation with your Montana friend and his wife - very nice people and tuned in to the Forgotten Coast!

Re: St Marks 10/23
Trout were back on the bars Sunday, good bite until the wind picked up. Over 20, with about 1/3 shorts, but a 21", a 20" and some upper teens mixed in. Clousers - brown over cream when it was flat, Olive/chart/white ('Lighthouse') clouser when the breeze picked up.

Re: St Marks 10/23
with the cooler weather, trout are back to staging - picked up 18 and two short reds along some creek mouth oyster bars. Even had some topwater action with gartside gurglers. No overslots, but a couple at 19". No real dinks either, most 15" - 17"

Re: St Marks 10/23
No joy yesterday - appears the warm weather scattered the fish. They weren't in their 'staging area' like last week. Had a few swings and misses, and some kayak control issues with the wind, but not near the activity of a week ago.

Re: St Marks 10/23
Refuge was active yesterday - water was clear and cool, but not cold. Picked up 26 trout, most 16" - 18", with two overslots at 21" and 23". Added a flounder and a few short reds. Olive over white clouser with minimal flash seemed to work best.

Re: St Marks 10/23
Fished the refuge Sunday - got one 15" trout off the lighthouse bars. Tried the bars to the west - knew it would be tough when I saw a big Alligator gar swim by - too much freshwater. I did get a fly-by from 'Pinkie' the flamingo, so that was interesting.

Re: St Marks 10/23
Maybe the cooler weather will kick things off - lots of rain this summer murked up the water. The floodplains are still full of water and the rain yesterday didn't help.

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
I've tried a few charlie type patterns - tan charlies should work well as a sand flea imitator for pomps and whiting. Yellow is another good color with gold flash, red thread.

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
Tough day today on the St Marks flats - brutal east wind. bounced a few clousers off my back. Did manage a 17" redfish and a 24" trout - trout was nice and fat and fought well on the 7wt. Added a ladyfish later but packed it in at noon. Looked like the wind was starting to lay down somewhat.

Re: Pompano
I'll mix some pearl, copper and UV pearl in with the gold - just a few strands of each. Fish may not care but I like a pearl and gold/copper combo for over the grass beds.

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
Where did you get it? Pomps are my favorite fish to catch on the fly - I've only got a few. Picked up two trout at the refuge today - 20" and 16", plus two puffers that wrecked my flies.

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
Not so good today - strong east wind made it tough. Did get my first redfish of the year - 21" on a clouser. And my first puffer of the year. Added a jack and had something get off after a few head shakes, but no trout.

I've been lucky - no puffers so far. I'm still waiting for my first redfish and flounder of the year

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
Flats were good today - 14 trout, nothing under 17", with 8 19" or bigger (two overslots at 22', 21' today). Clousers and intermediate line. Saw lots of catching going on with other kayaks and boats.

Re: St Marks NWR - 02 May 2021
I would hate to have someone listen to me while fishing from a kayak - every other word would be bleeped out. A paddle board would be better for casting since you could stand but the wind effects would be worse.
