Had one do the same thing to my livetarget frog a few years ago at a national forest pond at night. Pitched it out, heard a splash and felt something tug at it. Set the hook and reeled a big bullfrog in! Those guys are merciless.

I've been using a 5 turn surgeon's knot as long as I can remember to join braid to mono or fluoro. With that knot, 10lb braid tied to 20lb fluoro leader is strong enough to straighten out hooks on a topwater plug stuck in a log..
