Re: Newbie to fly fishing

7wt is better for for blind casting light flies but an 8wt is better for bulky flies like a gartside gurgler or big clouser, and if the wind is up. I normally bring 3 rods out in the kayak - either 2 7wts and an 8wt or vice versa. A 6wt can be all you need if the wind is down, but I wouldn't start w...

Good outing - I haven't caught a spanish all year - normally they're all over the place.

ST Marks NWR - 19 May 2018

Fished the lighthouse bars at the refuge from 3:00 - 7:00 PM on Saturday. Hot, bright with a steady breeze to start - couldn't get a thing until after 5:30. Then, I got three trout running the deep side of a bar, all in a short 30 minute period. All three were big: 25", 24" and 20". A...

SGI - 6 May 2018

Made the first trip of the year to St George. Went to the beach in the hopes of getting a pompano on the fly rod - no luck but did start to get into trout in the trough between the beach and first sand bar. The action was pretty steady between 9:00 AM and 11:00 - ended up with 12 trout including 4 o...

Re: Best Inshore Patterns

Clousers - #2, #4, chartreuse over white, olive over chart. over white (or tan) with gold, pearl and copper flash, all white, all black. Sometimes a pink, red or orange fluoro fiber 'throat' added to the clouser really sets therm off. Bead head or light barbell eyes is what I use. Gartside gurgler - ...

Re: Slim pick'ns

It's been a rough few weeks - one front after another. I did pretty good in early March but since then, it's been a struggle. Hopefully, it will break soon but we have another front coming on Sunday (high next Monday is below 70). I haven't caught a red all year and no spanish or flounder either. Ju...

What a life - lived through the Battle of the Bulge and helped start fly fishing in saltwater. I only know him through Youtube and forum discussions - wish I had met him.

St Marks NWR - 11 March 2018

Fished the passes to the west of the lighthouse this afternoon and had steady trout action along the oyster bars - ended up with 11 keeper size with a few at 20" and 3 at 18. They wanted a beadhead clouser, olive and brown over white with an orange "throat". This was the same pattern ...

Would like to target reds, are they way up creeks?
I don't know, but maybe in the deep bends of the creeks - I haven't been out since 20 Dec. I may try Sunday, but the water temp is down to the low 50's, so I may wait a little longer.

Re: St Marks NWR - 22 Dec 2017

Fished out of kayak - could have waded once I got there but the oysters are big and the bars uneven - plus the water is still a little chilly despite the warm up. I can't stand fly fishing out of a kayak and much prefer to just use it as transportation, but it worked out for the most part.

Yes - looks like things cool down next week but today and tomorrow should be warm and they should still be there.

St Marks NWR - 22 Dec 2017

Started the holidays early and went to the refuge this afternoon - fished from 2:00 - 6:00. Had steady catching all afternoon at the passes to the west - ended up with 30 trout, plus some real dinks. Got some at 19" and 20", with most around 15" -16". Olive over chartreuse over w...

Re: Today

Sounds like a good winter day - fish are definitely off the flats, although with this warm up they may return .
