Re: Ice Packs for coolers?
I've used Ice-packs, frozen water bottles and frozen zip-lock bags of water. They don't chill your drinks as cold as crushed ice would, but they keep it cool most of the day in a soft cooler. The hard part is remembering to freeze it the day before you go, though I guess you could just always keep a...
Re: retire
I'm only 34, so my advice may be a little uninformed compared to others on the board, but I know some people who waited and waited to retire, only to retire and realize they no longer had the health or energy to do everything they wanted. The fact that you're even having to ask the question tells me...

Re: Yates Creek?
Yates creek has grass and oyster bars. More oysters if you turn to the right. Your water depth is going to be tide dependant. You don't want to be in there close on a low unless you have a shallow running boat. This time of year you are looking at redfish with maybe the occasional trout or flounder...

Re: Keaton or Steinhatchee for Scallops?
Most years, either would be a good choice. This year, the scallop counts are kind of low around Keaton. They are more plentiful around Steinhatchee.

Re: New trailer
Backing it shouldn't be a problem. If it is, your trailer tires are too wide. I can't think of any cons.

Re: Must have fishing accessories
I like a boga grip (or a cheaper version) for handling toothy fishy or other fish I just don't wanna touch (sailcats). I also like to always have my mullet cast net. It may not be everyone's idea of fun, but catching a mess of mullet when the trout bite is slow sure beats the heck out of going home ...

Re: Black sea bass
And on that note, how does one properly filet and cook black sea bass? I can never seem to get it right Much the same as any other fish, just on a smaller scale. Remove one fillet, but leave the skin attached at the tail. The rib bones can be a little tough, but a regular fillet knife should do the...
Re: West Bay
I once threw a cast net on a school of mullet that turned out to be a school of sail cats. I must've had to pick 30 out of the net

I don't remember the exact number, but 60 something, compared to 180 something last year.Hit-n-Miss wrote:Did they release the counts?

He did say they found scallops at every station, just not in the concentrations they had last year.

Re: Only a few more weeks.
How bad is Steinhatchee on a weekday morning after scallop season has been in for a few weeks? i usually don't go once scallop season is in due to the crazies, but this year my wife wants to go since she's never been scalloping before (or even snorkeling). Haven't got to fish as much as i usually d...

Re: Rrd Snapper rules change
LOL, yeah, it's good news, but I don't think I'd go as far as calling it "common sense". It would have been common sense if the Feds had done it on their own without the State having to negotiate a compromise.zload wrote:Finally some common sense breaking out.

LOL, the FWC law enforcement may touch on that, but I'm not sure how much jurisdiction they have over rude behavior.silverking wrote: Will there be a session on boat ramp protocol and anger management too?

Re: 2017 Scallop Seminar
Just an update. The representatives from IFAS have offered to video & livestream the meeting through their Facebook page for people who can't attend in person. The video will also be available for playback later. I don't think they have published the scallop counts yet, but Dr. Geiger has said h...

2017 Scallop Seminar
I like to post this here every year for new people to the area, travelers or anyone else who may be interested in attending.
We have plenty of good speakers lined up this year. Even if you've been before, I'm sure much of the information will be new.

Re: Would you still fish if you couldn't keep anything?
I'd be humming "Just some good ole boys, never meanin no harm. Beat all you ever saw, been in trouble with the law since the day they was born!", as I slid the fish into my cooler.
When fishing is outlawed, only outlaws will have fish!
