Re: 11/20
Found some trout and short reds on Friday (29 Nov) at Big Pass - they wanted a black clouser for the most part.

Re: St Marks 6/30
It's been a pretty slow year on the fly for me so far - average number of trout caught, but most small. Few redfish but getting lots of ladyfish! I wonder if Hermine and Michael storm surges changed the patterns by altering the bottom. Plus side is that the grass beds have come back strong with the ...

Re: St. Marks 2/17
I had to use a compass just to get back to the lighthouse - I was going to cross over to Big Pass in the kayak but the fog was too thick. It's amazing how quick you can get turned around; at one point I thought I was paddling NW but I looked at the compass and I was going South. I packed it in and h...

Re: ST Marks NWR - 23 Dec 2018
Fished the refuge today - very slow, water is clear but very stained. Had one trout on in front of the lighthouse but lost it bringing it to hand. Would have gone to the western passes but the fog was too thick - had to use a compass at one point to orient myself just a few minutes off of the lighth...

Re: ST Marks NWR - 23 Dec 2018
3" - 4" on a number 2 hook. Finally found a good black bucktail (Bass Pro of all places) - good bucktail can be hard to find and black has been the hardest color to get a good one. I tie a few strands of flash - 3-4 doubled over - and have been using flashabou weave 3 strand blend in bronz...

Re: ST Marks NWR - 23 Dec 2018
Almost got caught in Big Cove last week trying to paddle the small creek to Hornes - would have been a long, mucky slog home.

ST Marks NWR - 23 Dec 2018
Fished the refuge this afternoon - took advantage of the light wind and paddled west. Had decent activity around creek mouth oyster bars. Ended up with 11 trout, most mid slot, with 2 shorts. Also got a short redfish. Black or black over purple clousers on an intermediate line was the ticket again. ...

Re: St Marks NWR open or closed?
According to Friends of St Marks facebook page it will be open: The Washington Post is reporting that the Senate has been sent home and will not return before Thursday, 12/27. Government shutdown will remain in effect until at least then and probably longer. At St. Marks NWR, the Visitor Center will...

ST Marks NWR - 16 Dec 2018
Fished the refuge again today - wind was a little stronger than forecast so I went to the east instead of the west - tried to paddle 'inside' in the creeks and coves to avoid the wind but the north wind was blowing the water out, so it got a little tricky. Ended up fishing a few of the cove mouths a...

St Marks NWR- Dec 08 2018
Fished the refuge this afternoon from 1:30 - 4:30 PM and had good action with trout toward the west passes. Ended up with 11 trout, 19" to 16" with most of them upper slots. Lost 3 more. Most were caught on a black clouser. I got one on a black gartside gurgler and lost one on the gurgler ...

Re: ST Marks NWR - 11 NOV 2018
sinking flies, intermediate line - but the water depth was only about 3' over the area where the flat transitions to the deeper cut between oyster bars. The tide was moving pretty fast so you need to compensate with weighted flies.

ST Marks NWR - 11 NOV 2018
Fished the refuge today from 1:00AM - 3:30PM, 2nd time since hurricane and things are slowly improving for me. Fished the passes to the west and got a 4 trout at 22", 20" , 17" and one around 14". Picked up a short flounder and 3 short reds (all around 16" - 17"). Lost ...

Re: RIGGING FLY ROD FOR SPECKLED TROUT
I'll use a either a 7wt or 8wt - normally an intermediate line (Cortland Little tunny or something similar) for deeper water, floater for shallower water and topwater flies - 80% of the time and blindcasting with the intermediate line on the 7wt. Mono leader for the floater with a 12lb fluorocarbon ...
