Yesterday's shocking St. Marks trip

I went out with two guys from my work in my 15" aluminum jonboat out of St. Marks. We'd planned to do some fishing in the morning, and then see if there were any scallops and do some snorkeling. The weather looked ominous from first light. Several large summer thunderstorm cells loomed offshore...

So I broiled trout, shark, and bluefish: Taste test.

Went fishing out of St. Marks last Thursday, no luck on the shallower flats, oyster bars or creek mouths (was an outgoing tide), I mean NOTHING (except pinfish in full force), so we went to about 10 & 11 feet more or less straight off Slough Island, and started getting some fish. We were throwin...

I've seen no scallops around St. Marks in past few weeks.

Over the last couple of weeks, on sunny cloudless and calm days with clear water, tooling around the flats in the usual scallop areas, I have not seen even ONE scallop. Not looking good. There are many theories as to just what makes for a good scallop season. Rain, or lack thereof, at certain times ...

Oh by the way COBIA are here.

My 11 year-old son & I were out on the St. Marks flats the other day, we were anchored over mixed grass & sand & we started seeing two long brown critters swimming over the sandy bottom. "Sharks" I say, but after a few minutes it became clear to me they weren't really acting li...

Re: New Google Satellite photos are up

I've found most of those abandoned kayaks and melted them down for scrap plastic. There's a war on in Afghanistan, you know!

New Google Satellite photos are up

The last time Google Maps - Satellite View images of the St. Marks area were up, they were MUCH better than the previous images that were up, and I posted about it. The previous ones must have been taken early in the morning when there was a lot of reflection on the water and it was high tide, so yo...

Re: St Marks 4/12

+1 on the dark on the way back in to St. Marks (fort) ramp. Especially in summer when the sun slants in and it's "near dusk" for a loooong time. "Just one more cast ...." What is the "best" size boat? There isn't one! I "make do" with my 15' jonboat. Has a Yam...

Mum to the end! Crabs are nothing but sea-insects! Only good for redfish food!

Re: Too many trout and redfish being caught?

My point might be, press for a dolphin season! Win-win. FWC could run it like they do alligators.

Or, we could make the trout limit 1, like with redfish, and have a closed season. Maybe make it like snook season.

Belated fishing report - St. Marks

Been a while so I need to update. Been out a few times over the past couple of months, been pretty successful with getting a slot red without too much difficulty, and I think it was December 30 (or was it 21?) that I ran into a nutty giant trout hole around the bars near the lighthouse area, where 1...

Re: Saint Marks 1-14-18

Welcome! I think I'm a lot like you. I've found this site very helpful and it has definitely helped my "fishing career." I met one gent in particular from this site and I've gone fishing with him a couple times and it definitely made me a much better fisherman. It seems to me that most of ...

Too many trout and redfish being caught?

This concern comes up now and then. We all see lots of boats out every weekend, lots of people catch a lot of trout & redfish, lots of shorts that might not survive the trauma of being caught, and so on. Perspective, folks, perspective. From Googled scientific articles on the diet of the Coastal...

So I went out Tuesday afternoon (St. Marks)

Being a state worker we had Tuesday off for "Hurricane leave." Very minor damage so it made no logical sense to me to sit at home twiddling the thumbs and wasting a day off by NOT going fishing. Now on Sunday night & early Monday we had the "brunt" of Irma hit Tallahassee, da...

Anyone else try to go out St. Marks Saturday morning? (8/19)

As of 5:00 am yesterday morning weather report said I think 30% to 40% chance of T-storms from 8 to 2, winds 5-10 north, switching to SW in the afternoon. Radar showed nothing ominous. Based on the past few days' radar, and from personal experience with that kind of summer forecast in that area, I f...
