Re: Loran
Short answer is no. A number of years ago before LORAN was shut down if one had both a LORAN unit and a GPS you could run to a stored number on the LORAN, set it to give a Lat/Long, and then compare it to the GPS L/L reading. It was always different. The difference could then be used as an “offset” ...

Mexico Beach 7/14-15
Yep. A number of years ago I was anchored on the Apalachicola reef fishing live bait for AJ. Two of us were in my 17’ Aquasport and one or both of us were fighting a fish most of the time. Those were the days. A large, 50’+ sport fisherman with six guys on it motored about 35’ upwind and upcurrent o...

Re: So I broiled trout, shark, and bluefish: Taste test.
Lots of good shark suggestions already. But, here are mine. Sharks have urea in the body that makes them smell and taste bad if not properly handled. Heading and tailing and gutting is best, but no longer legal on the water. So, cut behind the head, completely gut, and bleed out as much as possible ...

Re: Mexico Beach 7/14-15
I’ll ask: Were you anchored on natural bottom (your number) or a public, artificial reef? If on natural bottom, especially by yourself and fighting a fish way offshore, anyone parking near you or waking your boat is a jerk. I won’t anchor close to another boat on natural bottom, even if I have the s...

Snapper Season 2018
Thanks for the good reports. We went again Thursday and got a quick limit in 60’. I think we will let them have until next season off as well. Been a good season; none of the folks I’ve talked to can remember snapper being this good, I guess the restrictions they put on us the last few years did th...

Re: Maiden Voyage for VISION II WON
EJ, federal waters is 10 or miles out? Btw, the grouper were only 5-7lbs. 10.3 miles from shore, and the line is marked on a chart plotter. Red grouper 20”, gags 24”, pinch tail to measure, minimum length. Can’t tell from the guessed weight whether they would have been legal or not. Mangroves minim...

Re: Maiden Voyage for VISION II WON
Good first trip. Truth is season is open on gags, mangroves, and Red snapper in federal waters. But there are size and bag limits. A good check out trip like you described is a winner. Pumps will go, and good to find it out now. Keep that ledge # for next time. Luck, EJ Sent from my iPad using Tapat...

Snapper Season 2018
Snapper season is now over for me. All trips were from Carrabelle in my boat. Here are my reports: 1) Opening day, June 11, went with friend Al. Despite comforting NOAA weather reports, forecast seas and thunderstorms were rough and intense. We pounded for an hour through 3-5’ seas (NOAA 1-2’ transl...

Re: Apalachee Bay Sailfish
The other day I found an old USGS map of Apalachee Bay and the surrounding waters. The old map shows more depth contours than the NOAA navigation charts and it seemed to outline rocky areas as well. When I found the map, I began thinking, this is the Holy Grail of grouper maps; catching grouper and...

Monday Morning 7-9
If you haven’t been before you will be surprised. And happy. Econfina fishing not even close to fishing down at Venice. Not unusual for us to catch, purely sight fishing with lures, 25-50 reds or more every day, many well over slot. This is in 18” to 4’ of water, small tidal creeks and ponds. Giant ...

Re: Let’s talk coolers
I have had one of these on my boat for about 5-6 years https://www.igloocoolers.com/collections/hard-coolers/products/44683-marine-ultra-54-qt-cooler-white It has given me good service, but I must admit that I do not carry it in and out of the boat. That being said I can't attest to the handle stre...

Re: Let’s talk coolers
I have used an Igloo Marine and a Coleman Extreme Marine for a number of years and gotten good service. The Igloo Marine Ultra has stainless hinges which helps but still has a plastic handle. I have broken the handle but it took me years to do so. You can stand on it but I wouldn’t do it all day, ev...
