Oyster Bay 8/11/12
Had some friends down who wanted to go scalloping. We had a great dinner at Spring Creek Friday and then decided to launch the boat Saturday. We got a pretty early start, but by the time I had the boat at the dock and fully loaded the skies didn't look so good and the wind had picked up. I pulled up...

Oyster Bay 7/27-7/29
Put the boat in the water Friday about 8 pm with a buddy. We cruised out to a nearby spot and I noticed some surface feeding activity. I stopped the boat and handed my buddy a spinning rod rigged with a cajun thunder and a jig. I started to rig my own rod and he gets smashed on the first cast. I hea...

Oyster Bay 7/3 and 7/4
Went down to the coast for a quick trip. Launched the boat after unsuccessfully trying to net some bait. My son and I saw quite a few spanish, but never got hooked up. Threw gulp, topwaters, and a silver spoon at them. We did manage 5 shorts plus a white trout and he caught a monster sailcat. Water ...

Re: Sun Protection article
Ditto on the Tilley Hat and Costas. I like the Columbia long sleeve shirts, but when I am kayaking or throwing my cast net I have switched to a Simms long sleeve wicking T shirt. Hawaiian Tropic 50 or Banana Boat Sundown on my hands face ears and feet before I get on the boat. I have to endure the o...

Oyster Bay Memorial Day Weekend
Went down Friday afternoon with some friends and their kids. While we were getting the boat ready to launch, I put a live pinfish out and told my buddy's son to watch the rod for me. By the time we had all the gear on board and dropped the trailer onto the hitch, I looked up to see him holding on to...

Re: BIG shark at Rotary Reef, 5/6
I took the family on a boat ride to the Rotary reef out of St Marks 2 years ago. We were almost there when my wife and daughter decided they had had enough salt and sun, so we turned around and headed home. On the way in, I could see baitfish being worked over by something big so I angled the boat t...

Brush filets with olive oil and season to taste (garlic salt, lemon pepper, Tony Chachere's) and place in a pan. Cover with panko bread crumbs and then dust with parmesan cheese. Bake in a 350 degree oven 15- 20 minutes depending on how thick your filets are. Can finish under the broiler to brown th...

Re: Fishing out of St Marks Friday
Gate usually opens at 6. The fee used to be $3, but a signed federal duck stamp will also get you in. If it is a negative low tide, there will not be much water on the ramp. Crum's has ethanol free gas, but that will be out of your way.

Re: What are we doing wrong?
There is a lot of good advice in the previous posts. Trying different things is a smart plan until you can establish a pattern. I cannot tell you how helpful a fishing log is now that I have been fishing the coast for 7 years. I always note tides, wind and weather and what my catch had in its stomac...

Re: Where to surf fish on St. George Island?
I always fished in the State Park. My favorite spots were at turn in #5 (closest to the boat ramp) and the access closest to the actual campground. I agree with throwing a topwater in the morning when it is calm and then a silver spoon. If you are just looking for something to bite, there should be ...

Check out Bman's post or look at the NOAA report. The forecast has improved from 30 knot winds with 11-14 ft seas to 15 knot winds with only 4-5 foot seas and only a 70% chance of severe thunderstorms. I am staying home.

Re: Plastic worms for redfish?
You can also catch flounder using that technique. I sat next to a guy on a Galveston jetty who caught his limit of flatties using a purple worm (Texas rigged of course).

Shell Point 3/17/12
My son and I fished around Shell Point on Saturday afternoon on the falling tide with some friends. It was a bit breezy, but otherwise a beautiful day. We drifted the grass flats from 2 to 6 feet deep using gulp and soft plastics. Unlike most of you guys, we found the trout to be few and far between...

Re: St. Marks this weekend?
You need to take a close look at the tide and wind especially if you are new to the area and in a new boat. There is a negative low tide and a 10 mph north wind expected which will push even more water out. If you plan to launch at the lighthouse at 11, you better have a skinny water boat. There wil...
