St Marks 8/16

Post by timmy0257 »

Friends:

After too long of a wait, me and my brother in law are getting back out to do some fishing. We are giving St Marks a go, after not having great luck anywhere else. I have heard that there is a spot to the right, right out of the river that some have seen some bull reds pod up and feed where the depth changes. Any tips will be helpful. We will be on the water around 8am.

I am not sure about the spot you are talking about. But hope you have a great day. There is big group of us going out of Hickory Mounds tomorrow morning.

Wish we had a better report. Either way it was a good time.

We got to the landing in St Marks at about 8am. Very clear out, reasonable temperature and calm water. Went straight to the oyster bars as we saw a lot of mullet hopping out of the water. Tossed out my chartreuse Heddon Super Spook parallel to the south side of the bars - soon as it splashed in the water, I got a big hit. Fought it all the way to the boat and saw is was a fatty Pompano. I now realize I had my drag set too tight, and through practice, I will get better at being patient when bringing big fish in when I have lighter tackle (12# Seagar fluoro). When i got the fish to the boat, it darted underneath the boat and broke my line off w/ the lure still in its mouth.

Few sail cats later my brother in law landed a nice 18" trout which is now in my fridge.

Ended our trip with some cold beer out at the Bahamas on the sand bar.

We hope everyone else had luck on the water!

We did pretty good at Hickory Mounds. I caught a red, trout, and flounder.
This was my first ever red. It was 21".I caught a 20" trout that jumped out of my cooler as I was trying to close it.

Timmy, I would guess that was a Jack Crevalle you hooked into, rather than a pompano. They look pretty much identical in the water until you've got them topside, and I've never heard of a pomp hitting something like a Spook. Don't typically see them out there this time of year either, at least in my experience. The little jacks are all over that oyster bar and grass flat though, I catch tons of 'em on Spooks out there.

i randomly ran into MuleTrainGA yesterday and shared this story with him. he educated me to the fact that it was likely a jack.
