Will trade creek glory holes for hints on where to net shrimp

Post by GaryDroze »

My wife desires fresh shrimp. Not frozen store-bought I'm clueless on where to net them. Will happily trade intel on primo St Marks Refuge tidal creek trout/reds holes for general info on coastal shrimp target areas. PM me if interested in an info swap.

If I'm reading FWC's regs correctly, recreational shrimping isn't allowed from the St. Marks lighthouse down to Pasco County. Looks like you have to go west of the lighthouse.

Correctamundo. I read those regs, too. Have heard rumor of fall shrimp runs around Bald Point, well west of the Refuge. Hoping to dial in around that area.

Gary, why don’t you use the money you make from selling redfish and trout in the MaClay school parking lot to buy a few lbs for the wife?

Update: from a few emails, apparently Mud Cove is a potential spot for fall/winter shrimp run, but I have no experience netting shrimp there.

Just now checked PMs. Redbeard/Troutfisher/Onthechew: THANKS! I owe you all inside scoop on SMNWR fishery. PM me your preferences (high or low tide) and I'll let you know what/where works best for for me on Refuge creeks from the lighthouse east (Horns Creek to Porpoise Creek). Apologies in advance if I offer advice that is already in your knowledge wheelhouse. Maybe I'll just owe you shrimp!

Go out to the lighthouse, roll around in the mud. Drop by seafood house on the way back home and transfer a few lb of shrimp to a five gallon bucket with a handful of mud so it looks authentic. Come home dirty with tales of catching fresh shrimp.

Profit!

Actually, I had been thinking of bringing home the $2.75/dozen bait shrimp at Woodville Lumber Supply as Plan B. Will keep that in my back pocket if forum tips don't pay off.

Some of those bait shrimp are eating size!

The only time I have been recreational shrimping was in 1986(ish) and we went to Mud Cove. My cousin's grandfather had a little shrimp boat and we drug the net across that little cove. I don't remember catching a lot of shrimp, but I do remember that we got lost in the fog!

Mud Cove has come up four times for me between this forum, other forums, and emails. So I will try there after next cold snap and post results.

How do you plan on catching shrimp? I know you mention a net but are you talking about a cast net?
